A database is an arrangement of information that makes it easier to update and ask questions of the data. For example, Mr. Ramos wants to stay another night in my hotel; do I have a room left for Ms. Jones who has just telephoned me? If so, how much should I charge Ms. Jones?.

Very often, a user is seeking information located in a database, for example the availability and price of a hotel room. Your making a sale depends upon the user’s experience with this

with this database.

Using the hotel example, a database would “know” that Mr. Ramos has increased the length of his stay and that the value of the fewer available rooms has therefore changed. The price that Ms. Jones is quoted for a room reflects the new value of the room.

NASA Student Program

Lux manages residential student programs at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center University Programs Office. The programs are designed to maintain and broaden the Center’s interaction with the university community, with a special emphasis on populations underrepresented in NASA. Lux developed and uses databases to process applications and manage students’ travel to the NASA center.

HEAL Online Processing System

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Public Health Service, Health Resources and Services Administration, administers the Health Education Assistance Loan (HEAL) Program. This program provides loan guarantees to students entering certain health professions schools. The HEAL program

administers an existing portfolio of approximately $2 billion associated with approximately 56,000 borrowers.

The disbursement of these loans is tracked and managed using the HEAL Online Processing System (HOPS) which uses a web browser as the user interface to a database. Lux is the prime contractor to provide on-going technical assistance in the maintenance and operation of the HOPS system, this includes configuration management of source code and application design, fixing application and data discrepancies, modification and rigorous testing of existing HOPS web, Oracle and Crystal Reports code to ensure application is error-free and data consistency and integrity (all information must be documented), assisting staff, and identifying and resolving both software and hardware problems.
